The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of America’s great natural treasures, carved out over 6 million years by the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 29 kilometers), and attains a depth of more than a mile (1.6 km), making it one of the deepest on earth. Attracting 5 million visitors to the Canyon annually, it was a favorite of Teddy Roosevelt who visited several times. Aside from casual sightseeing from the South Rim (averaging 7000 feet (2100 meters) above sea level), whitewater rafting, hiking and running are especially popular. Hundreds of fit climbers successfully make the trek from the rim down on foot to the river and back up every year. Tourists wishing for a more vertical perspective can board helicopters and small airplanes in Las Vegas and Phoenix for canyon flyovers.

The Highlands is Denver’s largest neighborhood covering 250 acres of the city’s Northwest and has recently undergone amazing changes making it one of the trendiest nightlife and art districts in the Mile High City. Making up the Highland District are The West Highlands, Tennyson/Berkley Square and the Navajo District. Denver’s Highland District has recently been featured in Travel and Leisure Magazine and National Geographic Traveler because it has something for everyone. There are three pedestrian bridges that connect the many districts in downtown Denver. The Millennium Bridge takes you to Commons Park and the Riverfront area, The Platte River Bridge runs alongside the South Platte River connecting Riverfront to many shops and trendy restaurants that makeup Platte Street and the brand new Highlands Bridge crosses the I-25 bringing all of the Highlands together. The REI Flagship store is located in between the South Platte River and I-25, which features a 40-foot high indoor rock climbing wall as well as a mountain bike test course. Nearby, you can rent a kayak from Confluence Kayaks and try it out on the South Platte River and on summer evenings you can gather on the grassy knoll above the river for free concerts and movies. If kayaking isn’t your thing, you can always walk along 15th Street where you can shop at trendy boutiques such as Mona Lucero or have a drink at swanky martini bars like Forest Room 5. Whether it is adventure you crave, trendy nightlife and shopping you seek or a simple brewpub to sit and have a beer, Denver has a little bit of everything for everybody.
